Favourite OS X Applications

By Truman Boyes · · 1 min read

I use my powerbook for literally everything. I use it to configure routers, write documents, work on spreadsheets, code, surf around, and read. I have been using OS X for some time now, but moving from OpenBSD and Linux based laptops was not that easy to "make the switch", since it takes some time to find the right applications.

Here's my take on what I use on my laptop:

  • Mail.app - Email
  • AddressBook - Local DB and LDAP
  • iTerm - awesome tab based console application
  • Firefox - Simply the best browser available to date
  • Proteus - IM client / Jabber / AOL / Yahoo / MSN
  • Calc.app - Excellent Foreign Currency Exchange Script built in
  • VIM GUI - Nice Carbon based VIM client
  • OmniOutliner -Nothing could be better for taking notes
  • Zterm - Serial console application. I connect to routers all the time with this.
  • QuickSilver - Excellent HD Search Tool
  • VLC - plays lots of video codecs , DIVX, etc ...
  • Virtual PC 7 - I keep a copy of XP, Knoppix, OpenBSD, and DOS around ...
  • World Clock Deluxe - Register this application ! Great application to track lots of TimeZones
  • OmniGraffle - Pretty rocking diagram application
  • DragonBurn - There is not a better CD/DVD burning application
