update on things, and the current spam situation

I am in the process of moving a handful of domains from an existing server that I maintain, over to another server. I have had some of these domains since 1998, and provided accounts for close to 50 close friends. The numbers vary, as many people tend to use the system for simple email forwarding and in some cases personal websites.

A quick history: suspicious.org was a project that my buddy Matt and I came up with. We worked together at a small but very cool ISP in New Jersey. The main reason we put the system together was for research purposes in unix, systems administration concepts, and some next gen protocol testing. We had a IPv6 system back in the day on OpenBSD before the KAME code was ported into the codetree. Back then, I believe there were patches by Navy Research Labs to add IPv6 kernel support into OBSD, and various tools.

We supported IPSEC tunnels from some friends connections directly into the box, and then static routed them some static IP addresses, and general non-sensical things like this. It was pretty cool.

The system has been stable for a while, however it has had a major revamp in software in sometime. We would patch up bind or sshd, but thats about it. Finally I took some time to update the MTA from qmail to postfix. I am so glad that I did. Qmail is cool, but it's so old and unsupported these days. To enable SASL you apply one patch, to apply TLS you apply another, to apply greylisting you have to apply one more patch.

Postfix is a modern mailer with advanced features and is designed to be secure, and drop-in replacement for sendmail. Our new system supports greylisting, rbl, and lots of interesting rewrite rules. I am still in the process of moving additional mail domains over to the new system, and I expect things to go smoothly.

Enough with all this tech stuff!

Tonight I am going to a Neil Diamond concert in Wellington. This should be pretty cool.

My sister arrives at the end of this coming week from the USA. Looking forward to taking the trip with her and Jenny to the South Island. Planning Ferry to Picton, then Nelson, then making our way down the west coast throught the Fiordlands, and to Queenstown. Its going to be rad. Got the 4WD wagon all booked, so no muddy paths will scare us away.

Also, got the tickets to Bangkok all set. I will need to get a quick phrase book on Thai, and get some currency convereted before we go. No use getting 2-5% surcharges on credit card purchases.
